Saalbach - the undiscovered mountain

Today Keegan and I went on an organised away day to the Saalbach ski circus which is a huge area to the North of Kaprun. But I would say that the preparation for the trip started last night as we needed to find the pick up point. Fortunately we discovered the village lifts after some good directions from a really cool guy that sits on the table next to us at dinner. Anyway, I digress. So after dinner Keegan and I went for a walk in Kaprun village. It just looked absolutely brilliant at night. Coming from the UK we can appreciate that snowy buildings just look Xmassy don’t they. Well this is Xmas in mid-February so a mini mind job and made me really want to know what else they do to make the village look Xmassy, you know, in December.
Here’s a restaurant on a hill

And lastly another hotel that isn’t Xmassy but just looks like the staff haven’t taken down the deccies

Anyway, we find the pick up point and OMG there’s only a kebab van there. But it’s more Kebap, yes a doner meat stuffed bun. Now I was tempted but actually didn’t go for it in the end.

Anyway, today we were in Saalbach and what a place it is! A huge spread of descents but ultimately Keegan and I purely focused on a single blue run. Yes ok. It’s not as intense as a red but it really was a good decent length with its share of steel parts and flatter sections. The views were positively spectacular I must say and something I’ve never said before on my blogs while out here is that the descents are quite far that your ears do pop which can be a tad disconcerting at first but you do get used to them. Of course it also goes without saying that your ears also pop when ascenjding in a gondola / chairlift.

Mid point down blue 46...

Today’s stats as sponsored by ski tracks only had me at a max of 34.4mph but we managed to snowboard 15.8miles (yes that doesn’t include going up).

Tomorrow marks the last full day of our holiday which I am sorry to see come to an end. Aside from loving being At Saalbach today and don’t get me wrong it’ll be nice to get back to the glacier tomorrow, but it has left me with a regret that we didn’t get out and sample more of the local area that we could have done.

I now find myself wishing we’d gone to Zell Am See for a day and tried the mountains there. So why not go there tomorrow Dave? I hear you ask. Well we’ve got souvenirs to buy and it’s a great closure on an awesome holiday by going back to the place where we snowboarded on real snow for the first time, and did our first black run for the first time. It’s like going back to see an old friend for the last time before you have to go back home. It’s given us an awesome experience so it’s the right thing to do.

Yes we’ll be doing the Black Mamba one last time, I’ll think about trying to beat my 38.7mph (no promises) but we’ll definitely be doing our complete top to bottom 3.1 mile run which ends on red 11 and the brown adrenaline straight line section right at the bottom (which is where I nearly hit 40mph)

Keegan will be having the iPhone for a bit tomorrow so he can use the ski tracks app as he’s wondering how fast he’s actually going. It’s been quite interesting in mine and a Keegan’s fortes as for regular “blasting it downhill” I’m faster but on technical reds / steep slopes, he’s better / faster.

I’m so juvenile as the name of the last lift which is where we were all meeting at the end of the day...

In case you find yourself needing one, here’s the piste map to the Saalbach ski circus.

Anyways I’m going to sign off for now as a busy final day ahead in our winter wonderland. I’m sure I’ll post again before we head off and with more pictures.

But thanks for taking time out to read this verbal diarrhoea, it’s always appreciated. Feel free to leave any comments and I’ll get back to you 😊
